Friendly and knowledgeable waitstaff, great beer selection and decent food...even has an outside seating area. Had a few Clipper City Loose Cannon IPA's and was a happy camper!! Get a cab or walk the 2-1/2 miles from downtown to go to this true beer establishment.

Through this amazing website I learned of the westvleteren on the menu. I was on business from Pittsburgh and decided to stop. The beer selection was awesome. The place was nearly packed on a Tuesday night. I will gladly go back. Afterall, it will always be the first place I had westvleteren.

Very good selection of drafts, including regional micros. Excellent service for late (11 p.m.) on a Wednesday night. Very good burger served promptly and as ordered. Friendly staff and atmosphere. Recommended Norfolk stop for the beer hound on business travel.

Ok, I have to rate the beer awesome now. Taphouse now has several Trappists in the bottle, including Westvleteren, Rochefort, and Chimay. Also, Rodenbach Grand Cru, which is like the holy grail in my book. This is in addition to all the other great beers. The Taphouse beer selection definitely merits an "awesome" rating.

This is a phenomenally good pub/restaurant They have over 75 kinds of beer. 35 on tap, with everything from ciders and classic pub ales to belgians and some of america's best. Evrything on the menu is great, make sure to try the baked crab dip with a hint of jalapeno.

To Bill looking for Rev Al and the Sharptones. They are really a band called Moaning Lisas who sometimes open up for the band. Kind of a Joke from old guitar player Gene Temple. Gene also played in Factory Playboys so that might have been who you saw at Taphouse. Moaning Lisas have not played there in a while cause they only have bands that play for the door. Any information you need on Rev Al and the Sharptons can be found at www.moaninlisas.com

Determinedly plain, the Taphouse makes a virtue of simplicity. There's nothing to get in the way of hanging out and drinking. And drink you can, with the excellent tap selection. We sat out on the sidewalk and sipped Spaten Maibock, served up by our smart and saucy waitress, and dirt-cheap during happy hour. A fine place, truth. And not bad for parking, either.

This is by far the best and really only place in Norfolk that I would recommend drinking good, quality beer for all the beer conoseurs. The food menu is quite small but well prepared but the beers are to die for. They carry my favorite, the Paulander Hefe-weizen and have alos another weisson bottle, the Tucker which is excellent as well. They also carry my favorite belgium beer, Hooegarden which is a White Ale. The beers are resonably priced...in the $4 - $6 range. Some of the great new beers they carry now is the Rogue Hazelnut (great!), Allagash White (great!), Celebrator Dopplebock (awesome!), Abita Purple Haze (good!), and Framboise Lambic (great!). They have happy hour M-F from 4-7 pm with a $1 off all beers, so come get some.

The Taphouse was gracious enough to host a charity fundraiser for our medical school class. About one hundred of us participated in a fun evening of playing pool, drinking quality beer, and relaxing together. The staff was helpful and prices were great. This place is a sure bet.

Excellent beer, great location. I was impressed with the local musicians who played the evening I was there. The place is a bit smoky, ie the ventilation isn't up to snuff. But its typically a college type pub, with bar food, and great beer. If anyone can help me find Rev AL and the Sharptones.....great band.

A fairly good restaurant, but a great beer bar. It's one of those places that when you walk in, even if you've never been there before in your life, your first thought is, "So this is what it looks like in the daylight." It just always looks like the morning after there. Anyway, a very large and diverse selection of hard-to-find Euro brews and American microbrews (some better than others) on tap, reasonably priced. Disappointed that they don't have any Canadian brews. Menu includes lots of veggie items, so it's frequented by workers from PETA (which has its headquarters a few miles down the road). Frequently has some great live music. Worth a visit.

I was visiting the area, and a friend said we were going to the Tap House. Little did I know that such a fantastic beer bar existed in Norfolk! Great selection, including my favorite Belgian beer, Framboise Lambic. The atmosphere was really laid back and it wasn't too crowded at all. All beers were reasonably priced (a break from my native NYC prices!). Next time I'm in Norfolk, I'll be back to the Tap House!

Most of my earlier review (2000) still fits the Taphouse in Ghent, but recent exciting changes have greatly improved the already good beer selection. The Taphouse has added several Belgian beers to their draft offerings! At the time of this writing they have LaChouffe, McChouffe, Delerium Tremens, and Maredsous. Also selected quality imports like Aventinus and a German wheat beer are currently available on tap. While the specific offerings will no doubt change over time, the draft Belgian offerings will continue and the American microbrew selection is still one of the best, if not the best, in the Hampton Roads/Tidewater region. In addition they have a good selection of bottled beers, including other Belgians such as Chimay and Skullsplitter. While the main room is still officially non-smoking most of the time, enforcement can be spotty. Sometimes people walk through this room carrying cigarettes, for a while one of the chefs would take his smoke break in a corner of this room. The air from the barroom can't help but impact the main dining room when there are smokers at the bar. On Saturday nights after 9ish there is often a band in the main room, and smoking is permitted. In nicer weather this problem can be mostly avoided by sitting in the outdoor patio, where smoking is permitted but is less of a problem. I am admittedly smoke-sensitive and this may not bother you. All things considered, if you like quality beer the Taphouse has the best selection in Norfolk and I don't hesitate to recommend it highly. Note: while I rate beer quality and selection as great, not awesome, I was torn. I am comparing with the "awesome" selection at places like the Brickskeller in DC and Falling Rock Taphouse in Denver. Compared to those, I rate the Taphouse great.

The Taphouse is a very serious establishment for a hotdog town like Norfolk. Their selection is thoughtfully assembled and lacking for naught. They even have a decent whiskey array. On a balmy evening it's fun to stagger over to the tracks and watch the coal trains ease in and out of Lambert's Point.
